The Gift Of Love…

Alexandra never disappointed us. Years of love, loyalty and devotion so pure I simply had never experienced anything like it. Remembering that drive upstate from the city to our friend Lynne’s county home, I felt happier than I’d ever remembered feeling. We pulled up her long driveway and I turned around to face Alex. As always, she was sitting behind me, erect and focused. I opened her door and she leapt past me and ran with such force and abandon. One would simply refuse to believe how sick she had been.
Alex had always loved coming up to the country. Through this magical combination of wide-open space, clean breeze, and golden sunshine that she’d somehow transported back to that little puppy we’d discovered fourteen years ago in Florida. That evening as the sun slowly set, she refused to come inside. So Jeff and I bundled up, and sat with her on the deck watching while the wind blew her ears back. With her eyes closed and her nose pointed straight out, she was taking in the blend of fresh country scent.
The next morning she was up early and out running – Alex ran for four straight days. Early on the fifth day we woke to labored breathing and she could no longer walk. And as I followed Jeff, carrying her wrapped in blanket towards the jeep, I remembered. I’d asked Alex to make it though the wedding and then we’d take her to the country.
Alex delivered her gift of love. Two days later she fell asleep peacefully in my arms for the last time. To love and be loved is glorious. Our Alexandra.

That got to my heart. Jim and I love our fur babies. They are family. We have 5 cats and 2 dogs. We never had any kids. I know own how it is when you lose on of them.

Our dogs become part of our families–and we love them just as much– so when we lose them it’s just like losing a child .. It hurts just as much. It gets better with time but never goes away! I guess that’s why God gave us memories. I’m so glad I was able to meet Alex!! Hold on to those memories!! Love you!xoxo

Reading this makes me tear up. Alex was such an awesome dog. We missed her (and ya’ll) after you moved. I think she still remembered me when I visited you all in NYC.

Loved this story Eddie, it is so hard to lose one with love, whether it be friends, family or pet.
