In 1969 Cher recorded ‘3614 Jackson Highway’ with famed Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. For an eleven year old boy, hearing Cher wail Bob Dylan for the 1st time it became and remains one of my favorite albums…
As much as the music was the photography. Looking like an Indian princess, buckskin & beads lying in a field. It was taken by the amazing Stephen Paley whose name I recognized from countless other album covers… Allman Brothers, Sly & Family Stone, Laura Nyro, J Geils, Aretha Franklin, the list is endless…
It was a thrill many years later to contact Stephen and purchase one of his photos from that shoot…And an honor when in New York on business Stephen contacted me and stopped by my apartment and shot my portrait with his portrait of Cher… Great talent and super person…

You made me remember vividly poring over every liner note and insert I could get my hands on. I liked getting posters, but having the lyrics printed was sooo much better. No more guessing what a certain word or line was, lol. I think Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was the one I studied the hardest but Cher had some amazing album covers. I think my favorites are Dark Lady (simple and elegant with a black cat) and Half Breed (on the gorgeous Appaloosa.) Love reading Farm Stories and love the author!
Kat- Yellow Brick Road was like a beautiful art book!!! I remember well. I loved reading who the musicians were that played as you began to recognize the names. It was a much smaller musical world then. And I loved reading who did the makeup and hair. The image for me ended up becoming nearly as much about the photographer as the subject. I fell in love with the names Douglas Kirkland, Avedon, Scavullo and of course Stephen Paley. What a thrill it’s been for me to meet many of those photographers.
