Because I came out in 1987, when I was very young. Nobody wanted to be gay in 1987. It was sort of a death sentence. But my parents could have done a lot better. My grandparents were actually much better. Especially my grandmother on my father’s side. She was the only one to call me up and say, “I heard you’re gay and it’s fine. Don’t worry about it. I’m there for you.”
