“I’m sorry I didn’t have that opportunity.” Don’t be sorry! Without words, she knew–she got you. I can’t put into words how it feels to receive that pure love from a grandchild. It is wonderful, it is magical, it is marvelous…it just IS. I love your memories of Zelda and the memories you share with us!

Tears for the things I never told my own Grandma. I only pray I make this kind of impact on my own Grandbabies. They are a blessing to me, and I know you were a blessing to her too.

Loved the story Eddie, I can so relate on the”long family trips” always dreading them, but happy when we finally arrived. I’m still trying to figure out where you lived on State Forest Rd, is your place still there?

    Angie-

I love how we all have similar feelings and experiences that thread throughout our lives. Funny, I still dislike traveling.
Our house burned down many years ago. The rock driveway remains and the old stone garage. I don’t recall our address but Paul Ennis lives across the road from where our place was.

    Thank you for reading!!!

Knowing that you were so young I’m happy that I’ve been able to bring our grandmothers alive through my years of talking about them.
I’ve been blessed to have had such fabulous women in my life.

Thank you for all the love and support in life and dreams of Farm Stories!!!

Eddie, this was absolutely magic! You CAN paint a portrait & a landscape! I saw everything you wrote about! It’s even crazier because we allegedly have not met, but dang, we both grew up in Indiana not that far from each other! I was a serious kid who liked to read. I’d always felt different because I had bright red hair & I had a slight limp from hip surgery at age four. We made a yearly trip to Naples to visit my magical Great Aunt Rose. She raised my mom because my mom’s parents were abusive. Rose had this magical lyrical voice & she was always happy & it was impossible to be unhappy around her! My older twin daughter & I share a middle name that honors her & my mom, Rosann. My other twin daughter has my husband’s grandma’s name as her middle name. I was blessed with a mom & dad who both got me! I had Rose who shared my crazy red hair & my love of ancient Reader’s Digest! I had my dad’s parents who were poor as dirt but loved me with everything they had! I learned to make friends easily because we moved a lot as my parent finished 5 degrees between the two of them & my dad’s career advanced. I’m glad we ended up in Southern Indiana. I’m grateful for Rose, my mom & dad & my dad’s parents & that I met the love of my life in 4th grade. He was always the only kid taller than I was! Besides having bright red hair I was the tallest girl I knew! My dad was 6’8″ tall & 180 pounds! I was so incredibly scared I would be just as tall which didn’t seem feminine or attractive to me in any shape or form! I didn’t realize my husband was the love of my life in 4th grade btw! That took a very long time & is a story for another day! You keep painting pictures for us! Happy 4th of July!

    Teresa-

Thank you so much for sharing!!! Your voice is so clear!

Reading and watching old movies were my passions. I find when writing my memory plays in my head like a movie reel.
So much of your story mirrors mine. My Ma-Maw loved reading Readers Digest and Perry Mason novels. I would sit next to her and read them as well. She was my salvation!

I have a thing for redheads as my moms is beautiful fiery red. Also I was knock-kneed and pigeon-toed with corrective shoes. LOL… People ask me if I still fall down the way I used to growing up.

How incredible you knew what would be the love of your in 4th grade. The universe is so powerful! So much we don’t understand.
I’m looking forward to hearing the details!!!

Thank you for reading my Farm Stories and your beautiful response!!! It means so much to me!
    Where did you grow-up?

Have a beautiful 4th of July!!!!

Such a well written story and memory! I’m glad you have such good memories of your Grandmother and her life. As always I am so proud of your ability to capture time and life and write it down in such a way that it brings pictures into our minds. Such a great talent! Love you…

It’s difficult to choose, because all of your stories are excellent, but this might be my favorite so far! It certainly made me tear up and I can so relate to some of those emotions you described. But the story about the “plain” burger order really got me…I can’t tell you how many times I cried, but gagged one of those down with the remnants of ketchup, mustard, pickles and onion on the top of the soggy bun, as to not be “a big baby”?! Ugh….it almost makes me gag just thinking about it! I hope to actually meet you some day and talk, Eddie. You are the second person that has come into my life over the past year, who I feel some weird kind of connection due to similarities in our past experiences. Thank you for sharing your heartfelt stories! Take care❤️❤️

    Sherri-

Sometimes it’s the small, seemingly insignificant trials that leave the deepest hurt.
For me and perhaps for you too? Think about. Turn it inside out. Write it down. Own it.
Everyone likes to say how we can’t live in the past. Well, the past lives inside us. I believe we have to be able to look at it right in the face. Then we’re able to move on.

I appreciate your reading, supporting and adding your own voice and experiences to Farm Stories. There is a common thread in so many of us and I would love meeting and talking with you someday!!!

    Much love…

Eddie, I so enjoy each section that you release. You have such a talent for writing. (Almost as great as you sing…but that is another story.) I wish you could get published. I really want to read the entire book.

    Mr. Earnest-

I keep telling them here in NYC that I can sing but somehow they don’t believe me!!! LOL!!!
Had no idea the amount of work and time required in getting a book published. It quite a process. There will be a book, I promise!!!
Thank you so much for continuing to read and support my Farm Stories! I’ll never forget!!!

Perhaps your best one. Your words paint such a vivid picture. I feel your emotions. I had a grandmother like that. Your choice of words, such as describing the mcDonalds’ stop, is so effective. It brings tears and sorrow. Love my grandsons. Hope to be a Zelda. Btw. I’ve spent many days in Weeki Wachee area. Beautiful river. Keep writing.

    Donna-

Grandparents can be, and gratefully both sets of mine were-magical!
It was a rigid environment that I lived in but they provided a passage into a place where I could breath and be myself.
I’m happy you had that happy freedom with your grandmother and I have no doubt you are a Zelda.
Thank you for your kind words and beautiful support!!!

Eddie – finally a moment to be captured once again by your Farm Stories. Of all the stories I’ve read this one somehow paints the most amazing picture in my mind. I saw you sitting in the back seat. I saw you travelling down that road. I saw you painting. I saw you being in awe of Zelda. I saw you opening the brown paper wrap parcel and seeing Dark Lady. I was right there with you. The words you’ve placed on paper are your drawings…

Your stories always get to me. I know there is a common thread for us. Although I had two sets of grandparents, on my fathers side I knew them. However I did have a wonderful support system in place who took me under their wing. Elizabeth (known as Blodwen at that time) was my mom’s best friend. She was also one of my biggest fans. She would happily come and get me on her days off and we’d always set out for big adventures. The most wonderful gift of all is that she is still with me and happily reflects about the good times we had.

After reading this story I picked up the phone and called Elizabeth and told her how much she has meant to me. As you missed out on this opportunity with Zelda I thought it best to let Elizabeth how much I appreciate her in my life and for being my biggest fan!

“when it’s authentic, you love it forever” – sending you love Eddie

Bruce

There is nothing that makes me happier than knowing my memory can help someone recall their own.
Make me smile that you had the love and celebration from Elizabeth!!!
    Your support means so much!!!
