That Apartment, reminds me of several stores here in Bloomington. I always feel so out of place yet welcome at the same time. We have a few monks that live here and the Dali Lama shows up for a lecture from time to time (his brother is a prof. at IU)…strange day indeed for us southern Indiana Farm Boys, keep the stories coming Eddie

Grant- Feeling out of place yet welcome at the same time. I love that and it describes me most days. I doubt Helena has any idea the lasting impact that window of time spent with her meant to me. And probably of any of it showing me that it was okay- breath and laugh.
Thank you always for reading and adding your own voice to Farm Stories!
    Dali Lama!!! Thats amazing!!!
    Thank you!!!

Great read Eddie. You’ve been Buddah blessed ever since you’ve met Helen. Actually, long before.. I love this piece as it was a joy to feel you grow into a new world, a world of wonder. It’s really Buddahful 🙂

LOVED LOVED LOVED this story! Now if only you still had those Cher posters.

Bruce- A new beginning and having my eyes opened to things that would take me years to begin to recognize how it all applied to me while connecting to others. I’m forever grateful for staring that flow and showing me it’s okay: Don’e take it all so seriously.
Thank you always for reading and adding your voice to my Farm Stories.

    Now, about those posters-

this is what I’ve been waiting for!! no disappointment!! I’ll never forget an art teacher telling me to use as many greens as I could come up with to color in a group of trees…”there’s not just one green–this one tree has over 40 colors–including brown and black!!” that’s how I see life stories…it’s those colors we don’t see until we focus…then there’s no ”unseeing” bravo.

LJB- That is a fabulous comparison! Layer after layer of color….
Do you remember name of teacher who told you to 1st use all those greens?

Thank you always for reading!!!

I am again amazed and admiring of your ability to capture moments in time with such a visual, sensitive palette of verse. Your style is beyond prose…woven by the hands of a very perceptive Stylist. Good, good reading.

Marty- Am always so touched and thrilled from your support and voice!!!
My time with Helena was so wonderful. Opening my eyes to that which I wasn’t used to seeing. Freedom, change and giving me permission not to take it all so seriously!

I think a good story leaves you wanting more and asking lots of questions. What year was it? Where were you working? Did Helena have an accent? What color were the Trans Ams? Do you have a picture of Helena? Are you still in touch with her? What a great memory! Thanks for sharing, Eddie!

Helena. What an experience living with, knowing her and learning bits and pieces of her culture. I was there….in my minds eye. I could here the beads clang and, see the mess and wanting to clean it up myself, since I have OCD and a cleanaholic also, I was saying “NO!!! NO!!! No!! before you even said you were getting ready to put Buddha in bleach water. I could see that one coming, but know I would have wanted to since they are so full of cracks to get dust in and I would have wanted that dust out…….knew you would to. But I know how revered Buddha is to them, I know they would NEVER put their “God” in bleach water. LOL!! I could hear the roaring motors of 3 Trans Ams sliding sideways into parking places…they sounded like a very wild, fun loving, trouble making, family. Having a get together, with 3 with her family, speaking in a language that you hadn’t a clue what was being said, I would have been so wondering if they were talking about me. I’m sure part of it was. She had to be a very unique individual, insisting that you move in with her, casually calling you a “flamer”, sounds as if she was fearless, more than outgoing and didn’t give a damn what anyone else thought about her. This is the first blog that left me with more questions than answers. I just wished I knew more about her. Why was she wealthy enough to have such a nice place, where did she work or did she, what did she do for fun other than torment others, what happened to her, where is she now, do you still have contact with her? Why did you leave? You described her looks well I have a picture of exactly what she must look like…but may be totally off….a not so pretty Olivia Newton John. Short, not fat, but filled out, a J Lo Booty, a style all her own in clothing.. Am I even close LOL!!! Very interesting article…I want to her more about her. Keep up the good work making us wonder to keep us coming back!!! So interesting, different and unexpected. Love you friend!!! XOXOXO 🙂

Eddiie – Where to even begin? It seems we both made it “Out of Indiana” and have thrived. You to NYC, me to sunny SoCal. Divine providence must have guided me to your blog. This post brought back such wonderful memories of being one of Helena’s “Flamers”. As other commenters have written, there is SO much more of her to write about. As for you, I have never again looked at an 8″ x 10″ of Cher without thinking of you. Or a pair of worn penny loafers for that matter. ” I don;t know about you, but these pumps are killing this bitches feet!” No better way of clearing the bar of a bunch of uptight Hoosiers so you and your co-worker could enjoy a night cap seated together.

Like you and your Jeff, myself and my Jim have been witness to the profound discoveries of happily wedded bliss. Congratulations.

Continue to fill the world with your beautiful musings, and I for one will keep watching for more postings. So pleased you know that we both made it “Out of Indiana”. – Much love, Gavin

    Gavin-

Can’t begin to describe the smile on my face when I saw your name and post this morning!!!
I’ve thought of you so many times through the years wondering where you might be. Congratulations to you and Jim! Did we ever think we’d be this old and happily married to men. What a wonderful life!

How is Jennifer? Where is she living? Do you talk to anyone from our Butterfield’s days? I think about them all!!! Mona was in my wedding!!! Laughing so hard about those penny loafers and we did love a night cap. You’ll be happy to know Cher is still on my wall. I talked to her last year and I still become a nine year old boy. Some thing never change- Thank God.

I would love to talk to you sometime and catch up. Thank you for reading my Farm Stories. My manuscript is now being edited so hopefully a book in the very near future! It means so much to me that you read and made comment! What an incredible surprise!

    Love always, Eddie
